چکیده

Investigation of the wavelength dependence (725 – 1025 nm) of the threshold for nanosecond optical breakdown in water revealed steps consistent with breakdown initiation by multiphoton ionization, with an initiation energy of about 6.6 eV. This value is considerably smaller than the autoionization threshold of about 9.5 eV, which can be regarded as band gap relevant for avalanche ionization. Breakdown initiation is likely to occur via excitation of a valence band electron into a solvated state, followed by rapid excitation into the conduction band. Theoretical analysis based on these assumptions suggests that the seed electron density required for initiating avalanche ionization drops from 2.5×10cm at 725 nm to 1.1×10cm at 1025 nm. These results demand changes of future breakdown modeling for water including the use of a larger band gap than previously employed, the introduction of an intermediate energy level for initiation, and consideration of the wavelength dependence of seed electron density.

A First - Order Model for Computation of Laser - Induced Breakdown Thresholds in Ocular and Aqueous Media : Part II - Comparison to Experiment

An analytic, first-order model has been developed to calculate irradiance thresholds for laser-induced breakdown (LIB) in condensed media, including ocular and aqueous media. A complete derivation and description of the model was given in a previous paper (Part I). The model has been incorporated into a computer code and code results have been compared to experimentally measured irradiance thre...

Frequency Dependence in the Initiation of Ultrafast Laser-induced Damage

Numerous studies have investigated the role of photoionization in ultrafast laser-induced damage of bulk dielectrics. This study examines the role of spectral width and instantaneous laser frequency in laser-induced damage using a frequency dependent multiphoton ionization model and numerical simulation of an 800 nm laser pulse propagating through fused silica. When the individual photon wavele...

Efficient mid-IR spectral generation via spontaneous fifth-order cascaded-Raman amplification in silica fibers.

Spontaneous cascaded Raman amplification is demonstrated as a practical and efficient means of power transfer from telecommunications wavelengths to mid-IR wavelength bands through use of conventional silica fibers and amplifiers. We show that silica fibers possessing normal dispersion over all near-IR and mid-IR wavelengths can facilitate 37% and 16% efficient Raman power conversion from 1.53 ...

Correlation between early-stage expansion and spectral emission of a nanosecond laser-induced plasma from organic material

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used since 40 years on typical samples such as metals, alloys, rocks. Detection of organic hazards or analysis of biological compounds under atmospheric pressure with LIBS represents a new challenge. For this purpose, we need better understandings of the physico-chemical properties of the plasma in atmosphere and their influences on the LIBS ...
